United’s nonstop from Newark averages 14 hours 55 minutes, and Cape Town runs 6 or 7 hours ahead of New York, depending on the season. A month at Renewed Life Center usually costs around €3,000 to €4,000 (roughly $3,400 to $4,500), with medical detox included where it is clinically indicated.

We meet you at Cape Town airport, and you pay us directly.

Why do Americans choose rehab in South Africa?

Because the distance is real and the start is quick. The people and places tied to the drinking or using are an ocean away, and at Renewed Life Center in Cape Town admission can be immediate, typically within three days of first contact. For most people coming from the US, the flight is the only wait.

At home the bar and the old routine sit twenty minutes from the clinic door. In Cape Town none of it is within reach, and the day has a shape, from 07:00 to 22:00, that nobody has to invent for you.

Payment is the other draw: Renewed Life Center is private pay, so no insurer’s cap on inpatient days decides when you go home. The setting helps too: the house stands in Lakeside, close to Muizenberg beach, a few minutes’ drive from the sea, with a mountain ridge directly behind the grounds.

Do Americans need a visa for South Africa?

For a stay of up to 90 days, no. South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) says no visa is required for a US passport holder for a tourism or holiday visit of 90 days or less. That page is about tourism and does not mention treatment, so check your own case with the South African consulate.

Passport ready, the flight to Cape Town is the only step left.

The passport rules are the part people trip on. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after the date you intend to leave South Africa, and it needs at least two unused pages for the entry and exit stamps. Check it tonight, and if it is close, renew now: renewals have a queue.

Phases 1 and 2 together make two months, and further phases add to that. If your stay may go past 90 days, tell us early on the first call. We help international clients with the visa side, and it is far easier to sort out in week one than in week eleven.

How long is the flight, and what is the time difference?

About 15 hours nonstop from Newark. United’s Newark route averages 14 hours 55 minutes, and United also flies nonstop from Washington Dulles three times a week. Cape Town is 6 hours ahead of New York in US summer and 7 in winter. Book a return date with room to move, because dates can shift once your assessment is done.

Cape Town keeps South African Standard Time, UTC+2, all year with no daylight saving.

You cross the night in the air and land in a different part of the clock, so use the first evening to sleep. The family sessions we run on Wednesdays at 18:00 South African time fall at noon in New York in summer, or 11:00 in winter, so relatives at home can join by Zoom in their working day.

We meet you at Cape Town International, and the return transfer is included. Flights are booked separately.

Is South Africa safe for a rehab stay?

South Africa is rated Level 2 of 4 (“exercise increased caution”) by the US State Department, and a stay at Renewed Life Center follows a fixed daily routine. At Renewed Life Center you are met at the airport, driven to the centre, with staff on site around the clock, and driven back at the end.

The group programme runs Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:00, and the team is around you all day. Our longer answer is in is rehab in South Africa safe.

What should you ask a rehab abroad before you pay?

Ask eight questions in writing and read the answers side by side. A rehab centre worth your trust answers each one directly, with names and specifics. Use the list with any centre in any country, and send it by email or WhatsApp so the answers exist in writing before you pay.

Eight questions to put in writing

  • The doctor. Who is the medical professional on site, and what is their qualification? At our centre, our resident GP carries out the medical assessment.
  • The night. Who is awake and on site at 3 a.m.? Ours: staff are on site 24 hours a day, and detox runs under 24-hour nursing supervision.
  • The fee. What is included and what is not, in writing? Ours comes in writing the same day as the first call, with accommodation, meals, therapy, detox where indicated and airport transfers listed.
  • Before you pay. Can you speak to the team before any money moves? Ours: a free, confidential first call, and the fee in writing the same day.
  • The therapy. Which therapies, how many sessions a week, and who delivers them? Ours: individual psychotherapy typically three sessions a week in the first month, group therapy five or more, EMDR and trauma-informed care.
  • The day. Is there a written daily routine? Ours: the day runs 07:00 to 22:00, with groups Monday to Friday 09:00 to 16:00.
  • Your family. How do they hear from you, and can they take part? Ours join family sessions in person or by video.
  • After discharge. Who plans it, and what do you leave with? Ours: a written relapse-prevention plan built for your own home.

How much does rehab in South Africa cost, and can you use insurance?

A month at Renewed Life Center usually costs around €3,000 to €4,000 (roughly $3,400 to $4,500); the exact fee depends on the phase, the room and how long you stay. The fee comes in writing the same day as the free first call. Insurance does not enter into it, because you pay Renewed Life Center directly and we do not bill insurers.

The fee covers private or shared accommodation, all meals prepared by our head chef, individual and group therapy, the medical assessment by our resident GP, medical detox where clinically indicated with 24-hour nursing supervision, EMDR and equine therapy, family sessions, discharge planning and aftercare coordination, and airport transfers. Flights and any visa costs are separate.

If you still want your own plan’s answer, ask for it in writing before you fly. For what the same care costs in the US, we lay the numbers out in how much rehab costs in the US in 2026, and does insurance cover rehab explains what plans usually pay.

Insurance rules and centre practice vary in the US, so treat the middle column as the usual pattern and get any centre’s terms in writing.

Will you lose your job if you go to rehab in South Africa?

Your job can be protected if the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) covers you. The Act allows leave for treatment for substance abuse by a health care provider and bars an employer from taking action against the employee for taking leave for treatment. Your employer and HR confirm whether your own case qualifies.

Three rules matter for an overseas stay. First, you must be eligible: the US Department of Labor lists 12 months with the employer, 1,250 hours of service in the 12 months before leave, and a worksite with at least 50 employees within 75 miles. Second, the definition of a health care provider includes a provider who practises in another country, as long as they are a listed type of provider, a doctor for example, and authorised to practise under that country’s law. Third, entitlement is limited to 12 workweeks in any 12-month period.

For planned treatment you give notice early: at least 30 days before leave begins where the need is foreseeable. Start with HR rather than your manager. Your employer may ask for certification from a health care provider, so ask HR which forms they need and we will tell you what our doctor can provide. What happens when you arrive in Cape Town?

At Renewed Life Center you are met at the airport and driven to the centre, where the clinical assessment happens within your first days. If detox is indicated it starts under 24-hour nursing supervision, with medication given only when clinically indicated and prescribed by a medical professional.

The medical assessment comes from our resident GP, and the risk around withdrawal is weighed before it begins. Nurses monitor you through the detox, manage symptoms and settle your sleep. The full picture is at medical detox in Cape Town.

Then the programme takes over. Where anxiety, depression or trauma sit under the drinking or using, they are treated on the same plan. The first month is intensive individual and group therapy, the second deepens it, and a transition month and the sober living programme follow for those who want a longer step down. For a typical day, see what happens in rehab day by day.

What happens when you come home?

You leave Renewed Life Center with a written relapse-prevention plan built for your own home environment, and with aftercare coordinated before you fly. Family sessions on Wednesdays at 18:00 South African time, on Zoom, keep the people at home inside the work.

Discharge planning is part of the programme from the start. The plan is written around your actual life: your city, your job, the people and places on your route. Those who want a longer runway before returning can stay on in the sober living programme.

Why do Americans choose Renewed Life Center?

Because the medical side and the therapy are under one roof, and because we walk you through each step. International clients are a primary focus of our practice, with clients from the UK, the US, Ireland, the Netherlands and the EU.

Nikki Edwards, our Programme Director and Clinical Manager, has 11 years in recovery. Ruby Weber, our psychologist, leads the psychological side of the work, with more than 20 years in the addictions field and both international and South African clients. Dr John Wulz is a GP who works in mental health and emergency medicine and sees clients on site. John Roberts, senior recovery specialist and operations manager, has 39 years of personal recovery, and Angelica Nel is our lead counsellor.

What you get from the first message

  • Medical care and therapy under one roof. Nursing supervision through detox, then the therapy team takes over on the same plan.
  • Three phases and a home for afterwards. Residential, transition, then sober living if you want it.
  • A plan for your own front door. Written down before you leave, around the life you go back to.
  • Direct payment. No insurer’s cap on inpatient days decides when you go home.

How do you take the first step from the US?

Send us a message. The first call is free and confidential, takes twenty to forty minutes by WhatsApp, video or phone, and we reply the same day. You can pick a time that suits the US, and a family member can make the call for you.

On the call we ask what is being used and for how long, whether you have tried to stop before and what happened, and whether stopping carries a medical risk. You come away with a first view of whether you are likely to need a medical detox, which phase fits, and when you could arrive, and a clinical assessment confirms it. Admission itself can be immediate. You do not have to be sure it is addiction, and you do not have to have decided anything.

Questions people ask

Yes. Americans do come to Cape Town for treatment. For entry, South Africa’s foreign affairs department lists no visa for a tourism or holiday visit of 90 days or less by a US passport holder; it does not address treatment, so confirm with the consulate.
