SACENDU counted 7,119 people entering 69 specialist treatment centres and programmes in the second half of 2025, and 17% of them arrived with a dual diagnosis. Renewed Life Center, our house in Lakeside, Cape Town, comes first: we treat both on one plan, Phase 1 lasts a month and the standard stay is two months.

1. Renewed Life Center, Lakeside, Cape Town

Renewed Life Center is a small residential house in Lakeside, close to Muizenberg beach, with the mountain ridge right behind it. It treats addiction together with the depression, anxiety or trauma underneath it, on one plan, for adults from South Africa and abroad.

The drinking or using usually started as a way to live with something older, often a loss or years of anxiety that nobody treated. NIDA advises treating co-occurring conditions at the same time (NIDA), so the loss, the anxiety or the old trauma is on the treatment plan from the first week.

What does Renewed Life Center treat?

How does Renewed Life Center treat addiction?

In the house, each method has a job, and where a guideline backs it, such as NICE guidance on alcohol-use disorders or NIDA’s Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment, we say which one:

  • CBT works on the thoughts that lead to the next drink; NIDA says it helps people “gain control of stressful emotions and thoughts”.
  • DBT teaches what to do in the ten minutes when the craving is loudest.
  • Schema therapy and an IFS group look at the old patterns that keep sending a person back.
  • EMDR and TRE work on trauma held in memory and in the body; NICE recommends EMDR for adults with PTSD (NICE NG116), and Kerry Dominie-Williams runs TRE.
  • Family therapy, in person or by video.
  • Daily 12-step work. A 2020 Cochrane review found AA and 12-step facilitation more effective than other established treatments, such as CBT, for keeping people continuously abstinent from alcohol (Kelly et al., 2020).
  • Relapse prevention, which turns all of it into a written plan for your own street and your own Friday.

Weekdays start at 07:00 with a group called Just for Today, then groups until four: Addiction Theory, schema therapy, DBT, relapse prevention. Every evening there is a 12-step meeting. By the end of the first month the work has moved from the drinking to what it was covering, and Phase 2 adds two one-to-one sessions a week on trauma, relationships and identity.

NIDA links stays under 90 days to limited effectiveness (NIDA), so long-term drug rehab here is planned in months, through the Recovery Integration Programme to the Sober Living Programme, a home with regular tests while you work or study.

Tell us what is happening, and we will tell you in the first conversation what the first week looks like and whether a medical detox comes first. Ask us on WhatsApp about the first week.

What else does Renewed Life Center treat?

Gambling and gaming, sex and love addiction, eating disorders, and burnout when a drink or a pill has become the way through the working week.

The team

Nikki Edwards, Programme Director and Clinical Manager, has 11 years in recovery. John Roberts, our operations manager, has 39 years of personal recovery. Ruby Weber, our psychologist, has worked in addiction for more than 20 years and leads our dual diagnosis work; a psychiatrist selects medication where it is needed. Leila Bolland, social worker and therapist, has practised since 2015, Angelica Nel is our Lead Counsellor, and Dr John Wulz, our GP, sees clients on site.

That is why people choose Renewed Life Center: the cause gets treated, with methods the international standards back, by people who have spent their working lives on exactly this problem.

Need our help?

Families usually write when the first drink has moved to before lunch, money goes missing, or a promise to stop lasts until Friday. The first conversation is free and confidential, and admission typically happens within three days of first contact. Write to us about what you are seeing.

Location

10 Thaxter Road, Lakeside, Cape Town, 7945. Clients from abroad are met at Cape Town airport and helped with the visa paperwork; you can see the house in our gallery.

Ask us how to get to Lakeside on WhatsApp.

Most private rehab centres in South Africa are in Cape Town and Gauteng, with others in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West, and this list runs from affordable rehab centers in South Africa to private clinics.

For a family in London, Amsterdam or New York, a private programme in Cape Town costs a fraction of one at home, as our UK and US comparisons show line by line. Distance helps too: a long way from the usual bar and the usual dealer, a person can think about why they drink instead of where the next one comes from. A flight from Johannesburg or Durban does the same for South Africans, and a mild winter keeps the hikes going all year.

Pricing information

You pay us directly, so no scheme decides how long you stay; the fee depends on the programme and its length, and we send it in writing the same day as the free first call. Medical detox, where clinically indicated, comes with 24-hour nursing supervision. Get the fee in writing on WhatsApp.

Things to consider when choosing a rehab centre in South Africa

Choose the centre that can show you how it treats the cause, which methods it uses and who will do the work; rooms and meals look much the same everywhere. Ask:

  • Does it treat what is under the addiction? Ask whether depression, anxiety and trauma are treated on the same plan or referred elsewhere.
  • Can it name its methods and the standard behind them? A centre should name methods such as CBT, DBT, schema therapy, EMDR, family therapy and 12-step work, and say what each is for. “Holistic” on its own is not a method.
  • Who are the people? Names, roles and years in addiction work. Ask whether anyone on the team is in recovery themselves.
  • Is the programme bespoke? Ask for the hour-by-hour timetable: it shows whether the days are full of therapy or of waiting.
  • What happens in the second month? A 21- or 28-day package ends where the deeper work usually starts.
  • Can the centre care for other health conditions? Our resident GP sees clients on site, and medical detox happens in the house.
  • How is the family involved, and what happens after discharge? A weekly family group, a written relapse-prevention plan, sober living, a step back into work.
  • Who watches overnight during detox? If the answer is a phone number and not a nurse, keep looking.

At Renewed Life Center every answer is already on this page. For a day inside rehab, read what happens in rehab, day by day.

The admissions process at Renewed Life Center is quick and simple

Admission takes four steps and typically happens within three days of first contact. “I drink every day and I am scared to stop” is a full first message, and a partner, parent or grown child can write for the person.

  1. You message us on WhatsApp and say who the treatment is for. We reply the same day.
  2. The first conversation is free, confidential and takes 20 to 40 minutes by WhatsApp, video or phone. We ask about the substance, the physical risk and what else is in the picture, and tell you whether a medical detox is needed.
  3. You get the fee in writing the same day.
  4. A clinical assessment follows, and admission can be immediate. See the full admissions process.

If the person has not agreed yet, start with our guide on how to talk to a loved one about rehab, or write to us about it.

Are there free or government rehabilitation centres in South Africa?

Yes. Free rehabilitation centres are state-funded: the Department of Social Development lists public centres in every province, including Newlands Park in KwaZulu-Natal and Kensington in the Western Cape (Vuk’uzenzele, January 2023).

Kensington treatment centre in Cape Town was repurposed for young people in January 2024 (Western Cape Government), and a programme officer at U-Turn told GroundUp there is “a long waiting period” for state-funded beds. Our page on free rehabs in Cape Town explains how to get onto those lists. If the wait is the problem, message us: admission typically happens within three days of first contact.

Rehabilitation options: inpatient or outpatient rehab?

Inpatient rehab is the right option when withdrawal could be dangerous, when home is where the using happens, or when outpatient care has already been tried. Outpatient care means living at home and attending by day, and it works when home is stable and the person can stop safely; ours is the Outpatient Programme, Monday to Friday.

Anyone who drinks every day or takes benzos, sleeping tablets, mandrax, GHB or opioids should not stop suddenly on their own, because withdrawal from these can be dangerous. Message us and we will tell you whether a medical detox is needed and arrange it. If someone is unconscious or fitting, call 10177 or 112 now.

Rehab prices in South Africa: how much does rehab cost?

General inpatient rehab in South Africa costs about R50,000 to R100,000 for 24 to 28 days, and luxury programmes start at around R200,000, according to the cost guide on Liberty Home Rehab’s site, checked in October 2026. On this list, White River Manor publishes a US-dollar price for 28 days, and most others give the fee on request.

Our page on rehab costs in Cape Town breaks each fee down. When you compare fees, compare what each one buys. With us it buys treatment for the cause, CBT as NICE recommends it for alcohol problems, EMDR for trauma, daily 12-step work, and a team with decades in addiction and in recovery. You pay us directly, so no scheme decides when you go home. Get our fee in writing on WhatsApp.

Questions people ask about rehab centres in South Africa

The best rehabilitation in South Africa is the one that treats the cause as well as the addiction, uses methods the international standards recommend and has experienced people you can name. That is how Renewed Life Center in Cape Town works, and it is why it opens this list: dual diagnosis on one plan, CBT, DBT, schema therapy, EMDR and daily 12-step work, and a team with decades in addiction and in recovery.

The public treatment centres run by the Department of Social Development, and SANCA’s non-profit programmes, cost the least, and you wait for a bed. Cheap rehab centers are rare in the private sector. Among private rehab centres, general inpatient programmes cost about R50,000 to R100,000 for 24 to 28 days, according to Liberty Home Rehab’s cost guide in October 2026, so compare what each fee covers and how long it lasts. Ours depends on the programme and the length of stay, and we send it in writing the same day.

Drug rehabilitation facilities in South Africa, from addiction rehab centers to rehab hospitals, offer rehabilitation for drug addicts in residential and outpatient programmes that combine detox, therapy and aftercare for alcohol, tik, cocaine, heroin, cannabis or pills. Common drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres include Houghton House in Johannesburg, SANCA across the country, ARCA in Durban and Kenilworth Clinic in Cape Town. Choose the drug addiction rehab that treats what sits under the addiction, uses methods the WHO and UNODC standards back and names its people.

Most private centres are in four cities, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban, so start with your province and the cards above. Rehab places in the Western Cape run from Lakeside and Kommetjie to Kenilworth, Hout Bay and Paarl, and the furthest Western Cape rehabilitation centre on this list, in Paarl, is about an hour from the city. The full list is on rehab centres in Cape Town. Among rehab centres in Durban, ARCA and Newlands Park are the ones people search for most. In Gauteng, rehabs in Johannesburg include Houghton House and SANCA Central Rand, with Crossroads in Pretoria. Our own programmes, both in Lakeside: drug rehab Cape Town and alcohol rehab Cape Town. If travel is the question, write to us from wherever you are.

Yes. Free rehabilitation centres are run by the Department of Social Development and by non-profits such as SANCA, which has branches in most provinces; SANCA Durban is one of the alcohol rehabilitation centres in Durban. A free bed usually means a waiting list, so ask about the wait on the first call. People also ask about the KwaSizabantu rehab centre in KwaZulu-Natal. For Cape Town, our guide to free rehabs in Cape Town lists the funded options. If the wait is the problem, message us.

Alcohol rehab differs from drug rehab mainly in the detox: stopping alcohol after daily drinking can be dangerous, so it often starts with a medical detox. Otherwise a drug rehabilitation center and a drug recovery center usually mean the same residential programme, with detox where needed, then therapy and a plan for afterwards. Long term drug rehab means three months or more, often in phases. Ask any of the rehabilitation facilities available to help addicts what they treat, how they treat it and who will treat you.

People also look up Break Free rehab, the Welbedacht treatment centre, The Way Recovery in Waterkloof, Diamond Recovery Centre, Changes Rehab, Ixande and South Coast Recovery Centre (Pty) Ltd. For any centre not on this list, ask the questions in “Things to consider” above. If you are comparing one of them with us, send us its name and we will tell you how our programme differs.

Ja. Hierdie bladsy is ‘n lys van rehabilitasiesentrums in Suid-Afrika, van Kaapstad tot Johannesburg, Pretoria en Durban. Renewed Life Center in Lakeside, Kaapstad, behandel verslawing saam met depressie, angs of trauma. Stuur vir ons ‘n WhatsApp; ons antwoord dieselfde dag.

Yes: government drug rehabilitation centres are free and come with a waiting list, among them Newlands Park in Durban and Dr Fabian and Florence Ribeiro in Gauteng (Vuk’uzenzele). Our guide to free rehabs explains how those lists work.

A drug recovery centre is a residential programme run by therapists and counsellors; a rehab hospital is a medical or psychiatric hospital with an addiction ward, such as Kenilworth Clinic. A mental rehabilitation center treats depression and anxiety, and a rehab clinic or substance abuse rehabilitation center treats the addiction itself; at Renewed Life Center both sit on one plan.

Often only for a limited number of days, and several centres on this list work with schemes on that basis. We do not bill schemes: you pay us directly, so a scheme’s day limit does not decide when you go home.

Ask three things: how it treats what sits under the addiction, which methods it uses and which international standard backs them, and who the people are, by name and by years in the field. A good centre answers all three on the first call and sends you its weekly timetable.

Drug abuse treatment centers and drug abuse rehabilitation programmes in South Africa combine detox, therapy and aftercare: medical detox where it is needed, then therapy for drug abuse and the conditions under it, with CBT, DBT, trauma work, family sessions and a written relapse-prevention plan. At Renewed Life Center, rehab for alcohol abuse and drugs runs on one plan with depression, anxiety and trauma.

Yes. Cape Town has the largest group of drug and alcohol rehab centers in the Western Cape, from Renewed Life Center in Lakeside to Kenilworth, Hout Bay and Paarl. Drug rehab centres in KZN include ARCA and SANCA in Durban and the state centre Newlands Park. Tell us your city and we will say which option is close and what the first week looks like.

Yes. Several centres on this list treat depression and anxiety alongside addiction, and Kenilworth Clinic is a psychiatric hospital. At Renewed Life Center depression, anxiety and trauma are treated in the same house and on the same plan as the drinking or drug use, with Ruby Weber, our psychologist, leading that work.

Jahara Treatment Centre is outside Hoedspruit in Limpopo and caps its residents at 40 (Letaba Herald). The Nishtara Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centre is in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, and was described in 2014 as a project funded by the Department of Social Development (BAPS Charities). Rauf Rehabilitation Centre is in Durban (UKZN study). If none of them is close, tell us your city.

No. Searches for “Entabeni rehab centre Durban” lead to Life Entabeni Hospital in Berea, which has a rehabilitation ward for physical rehabilitation, not addiction. Among rehabilitation centres in KZN that treat addiction, this list has ARCA, Newlands Park and SANCA Durban, with The Cedars’ South Coast Estate near Scottburgh.

Yes. Netcare Akeso Gqeberha in Walmer is a private mental health hospital that treats substance use alongside other conditions, and the Eastern Cape’s state treatment centre is Ernest Malgas, on the Department of Social Development’s list. Many Eastern Cape families also look at Cape Town, a short flight away.

Yes, this page is one: 12 centres with what they treat, how they treat, the team, the location and pricing, plus the state centres in each province.

Private centres, ours included, admit adults who agree to come, so the family’s real task is getting to yes. A relative can talk to us first, and family support can start before the person agrees. Our guide on how to talk to a loved one about rehab covers what to say.

Yes. British and US passport holders can enter without a visa for 90 days, and a stay longer than three months needs a medical treatment visa. For clients from abroad we meet you at Cape Town airport, take you back when you leave and help with the visa paperwork. See the process from the UK, and whether rehab in South Africa is safe.

Cape Town has the largest group: Renewed Life Center in Lakeside, Kenilworth Clinic, Akeso Stepping Stones in Kommetjie, Harmony in Hout Bay and The Cedars’ Cape Manor House, with Bloemendal in Paarl; our guide to rehab centres in Cape Town covers the city in more detail. For rehab in Durban, ARCA and SANCA are in Berea, Newlands Park is in Newlands West, and among rehab centres in KZN The Cedars runs estates on the South Coast and in the Midlands. Many Durban families choose Cape Town for the distance from home.

We built this list in October 2026 from each centre’s own pages and the sources below.
