How do you go to rehab abroad from the UK?
From a first call in Britain to a bed in Lakeside, Cape Town, the process runs on days rather than weeks. Every step in order: the assessment, the paperwork, the flight, the airport transfer and the way home.

Most families picture months of paperwork before anyone can fly. The paperwork is a passport, a prescription and a letter from a GP. What takes time is the decision, and that part sits with the family, not with an embassy.
The UK Foreign Office publishes its own guide to rehabilitation in South Africa, which lists “an opportunity to remove oneself from triggers” among the reasons British clients travel. What follows is that trip as a sequence, with dates and sources attached.
What are the steps from a first call in the UK to arriving in Cape Town?
Seven steps: a free first call, a clinical pre admission assessment, a written plan and a date, payment, documents and medication, the flight, and the transfer from the airport. What happens on the first call?
The first conversation with our admissions team lasts 20 to 40 minutes, by WhatsApp, video or phone, and costs nothing. The point is to understand what has been happening, what has already been tried, and whether residential treatment in Cape Town fits the case.
Expect questions about the drinking or the drug use in plain terms, how long it has gone on, previous treatment in the UK, current medication and any diagnosis already on file. Practical ones too: work, children, court dates.
Calls often come from a parent, a partner or an adult child rather than from the person who would travel. That is ordinary in addiction care and changes nothing about how the call runs. Where the person concerned has not agreed to anything yet, start with how to raise rehab with someone you love.
One thing a first call cannot settle: whether to stop drinking or using before the flight. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be dangerous without supervision, so that is a doctor’s call. The NHS says a GP “may be a good place to start”.
What does the pre admission assessment cover?
The pre admission assessment is a clinical conversation of 45 to 90 minutes, held by video within three days of the first call. What it settles: whether residential treatment in our setting is appropriate, and what the first month should contain. Medical risk, for a long flight and for detox, is the main subject.
Three things get settled: whether detox is clinically indicated, and so whether the stay opens under 24 hour nursing supervision; how long to stay; and what the plan does about depression, anxiety, PTSD or burnout alongside the addiction, treated at our centre in the same place on one plan.
Raise these at the assessment: before flights are booked
- any seizure or severe withdrawal after stopping alcohol or benzodiazepines
- heart, liver or kidney problems, or a recent hospital admission
- pregnancy, or any chance of it
- every current prescription, including anything a UK psychiatrist manages
A long flight changes the risk on several of these, which is why they belong in the assessment rather than the departure lounge.
Plenty of clients do the assessment with a partner listening in. The written plan and the admission date follow a day or two later. A date can move forward when the clinical picture calls for it.
Do British citizens need a visa for rehab in South Africa?
Not for a stay of up to 90 days. “You can visit South Africa without a visa for up to 90 days for business or tourism”, GOV.UK states. The South African Department of Home Affairs lists the United Kingdom in its exempt countries table at 90 days on an ordinary passport, with no visa fee.
Ninety days covers Phase 1 and Phase 2, the two months most clients are advised to complete. For anything longer the Foreign Office is direct: “We advise most people to apply for a medical visa requesting a minimum six month stay”, its rehabilitation guide says. Visa costs sit outside our fee, and visa assistance is included for international clients.
Passports catch people out more often than visas do. A passport needs “an ‘expiry date’ at least 30 days after the date you leave South Africa and have at least 2 blank pages”, the same GOV.UK page says.
Before you fly: what goes in the folder
- a passport valid for at least 30 days after the date of leaving South Africa, with 2 blank pages
- a valid prescription for every scheduled medicine in the luggage, and no more than one month of it
- a short letter from the GP listing current medication and conditions
- travel insurance that runs to the end of the stay
Four documents. That is the whole administrative burden of treatment abroad.
What do you need to sort out before you fly?
Medication, insurance and a clear split of who arranges what. South Africa regulates what a traveller carries: scheduled medicines need a prescription, and the quantity may “not exceed a quantity required for use for a period of one month”, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority stated in July 2022.
Bring that month in its original packaging with the prescription beside it. Running out in Cape Town is slow to fix, because “most prescription medicines in the UK need a prescription (‘script’) from a doctor in South Africa”, the Foreign Office health advice notes. Insurance is worth reading twice rather than buying twice. “There is no healthcare agreement between the UK and South Africa”, the Foreign Office states. The same rehabilitation guide puts one question to an insurer in writing: are you covered if you suffer a relapse or need treatment linked to an addiction. Treatment fees are paid privately, and what a month and two months cost against a UK clinic sits in UK rehab cost against Cape Town. The same guide adds: “inform a family member and/or friend about your travel plans, the programme, the treatment duration and when you will return to the UK.”
What happens on the travel day and when you land in Cape Town?
A nonstop flight from London Heathrow to Cape Town takes about 11 hours. Someone from the centre meets every international arrival at Cape Town International Airport. Nobody books a car or queues for a taxi after a night in the air. The drive runs south to Lakeside, in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs.
Both British carriers serve the route. Virgin Atlantic lists an 11 hour flight time and flies daily from 15 October 2026 to 20 April 2027. British Airways flies it from Heathrow too and, by its March 2026 announcement, adds a third daily Cape Town service from December 2026.

Cape Town International is not a small airport. Wesgro, the Western Cape’s trade and investment agency, reported in January 2026 that “3.3 million two-way international passengers passed through the airport’s international terminal in 2025”.
The first evening is deliberately empty: a meal, a room, a look round the property, sleep. Nobody sits a tired person down for an intake interview at eleven at night. Questions about the road itself are answered in whether Cape Town is safe for rehab clients.
What happens in the first days at the centre in Lakeside?
Day one is rest. Day two brings the medical assessment by our resident GP and the clinical intake with the therapist who will carry the case. Then a walk round a gated property with a mountain ridge directly behind it. Day three is the ordinary programme, on a day that runs from 06:30 to quiet hours at 22:30.
What happens before the programme starts

- Medication reviewed against the letter from the UK GP
- Medical detox with 24 hour nursing supervision, where clinically indicated
- Clinical intake with the primary therapist, and an introduction to the group
Group work then runs Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 16:00: Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Process Group, Psychoeducation, Relapse Prevention, Art Therapy. How does family keep in touch while someone is in Cape Town?
Through scheduled video contact rather than an open phone line. Family therapy sessions run as part of the programme and can be held by video. A family support meeting runs every Wednesday at 18:00 on Zoom. A two hour difference in the British winter puts that meeting at 16:00 in London, inside an ordinary working day.
Contact is structured on purpose. Early treatment is fragile, and a daily call home tends to carry the crisis back and forth instead of leaving it in the therapy room. The pattern agreed before departure covers the named family contact, how often calls happen, and how updates are shared.
Relatives who want to come to Cape Town should raise it at the pre admission assessment, so the trip is planned around the clinical phase. Many UK families fold the visit into a few days in the Western Cape.
What happens at the end of treatment and after the flight home?
Discharge is a working day, not a handshake at the gate. Every discharge from Renewed Life Center includes a written relapse prevention plan built specifically for the client’s home environment, plus structured aftercare coordination. The return flight is arranged the way the arrival was.
Two stages sit between the last residential month and a flat in Britain. The Recovery Integration Programme is a transitional month: a client keeps the full programme but can leave the centre during the day and returns in the evening. Therapeutic staff are on site 24 hours. The Sober Living Programme adds structured housing, regular testing and a weekly session with an assigned counsellor.
The Foreign Office is realistic about the drop after treatment: “after treatment you will not have the same access and support from counsellors and peers”. Its advice is to “create a post-treatment plan, ideally with your treatment provider” and to join a support group at home. That plan leaves Cape Town in the hand luggage, and sober living and aftercare covers the later stages.

Someone from the centre, at a pickup point agreed before departure. The airport transfer is part of the fee at Renewed Life Center, so arriving clients do not drive or negotiate with anyone in the arrivals hall. Every client has a medical assessment by our resident GP, and medical detox runs with 24 hour nursing supervision where it is clinically indicated. A psychiatrist selects medication where it is needed. Beyond the centre, the Foreign Office notes that “South Africa has a very high standard of private medical care”.
With a fit note. “Employees must give their employer a ‘fit note’ (sometimes called a ‘sick note’) if they have been ill for more than 7 days in a row and have taken sick leave”, GOV.UK states. A GP, hospital doctor, registered nurse, pharmacist or physiotherapist can issue one. Ask before the flight, not from Cape Town.
